A traditional war epic in "The Woman King"

In "The Woman King," the consistently regal Oscar winner

plays General Nanisca, the commander of the Agojie,

an all-female band of soldiers that guarded

the West African Kingdom of Dohemy in the 19th century,

and she plays a mass of muscle

battle scars, and world weary.

The picture is a sort of throwback to the large

thrilling, and dramatic warrior epics

that used to be all too popular at the cinema

with the twist that it's women not men driving the action.
